In the latest post from Love-Teeth Dental Practice, we talk further about gum contouring, answering many questions surrounding this treatment.

What is Gum Contouring?

A great smile is achieved by a balanced appearance of your teeth and gums. Gum Contouring is the process of realigning the gum to raise the gum level and show more of the teeth underneath.

There are many reasons why the gum may appear prominent in an individuals smile. Sometimes, a high lip will mean that all of the front teeth and gums are exposed, producing what is often known as a “gummy smile”. In other instances, certain medications may make the gum grow longer or a condition known as altered passive eruption can prevent permanent teeth from fully protruding, leaving large looking gums and very small looking teeth.

How is Gum Contouring Carried out?

Depending on the nature of the case, the gum may simply be trimmed back or the bone and gum may need to be trimmed. During the treatment, your dentist will use a local anaesthetic, alongside a laser or scalpel to reshape and trim your gumline.
