Your Guide to Dental Bridges

In the modern-day, there are various solutions to replace missing teeth. Once missing teeth are replaced, you may often be able to chew easier, talk more clearly, maintain a healthy face structure and feel more confident in smiling.

How Does a Dental Bridge Work?

Traditionally, a dental bridge will require the teeth either side of the missing tooth to be filed down to support a crown. The false tooth will be connected to the crowns on either side which are supported by the natural teeth underneath. In other cases, implants may be used either side of the missing tooth to hold the pontic in place.

Another type of dental bridge is a Maryland bridge, which requires very little filing down of the natural teeth either side of the gap. With a Maryland bridge, the false tooth is supported by metal wings which are attached behind the adjacent teeth.

Creating a Dental Bridge: The Procedure

When left with a gap, many people worry that they will have to wait a long time for their new bridge to be made. Whilst your impressions will need to be sent off to a dental lab, your dentist will provide you with a temporary bridge that will be used to protect your gums.

Typically, your first bridge appointment will consist of your dentist taking impressions and filing the abutment teeth to make room for a crown. On your next visit, your dentist will fit your bridge and then adjust as necessary to ensure a perfect fit.

Aftercare of a Dental Bridge

There are no specific aftercare instructions for a bridge, but you will need to ensure that you maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing in between all of the teeth, daily.

When a dental bridge is taken care of effectively and regular dental appointments are maintained, a dental bridge can last anywhere between 5 and 15 years.
