EMS Airflow at Love-Teeth: A Better Kind of Dental Clean
Most of us have had a scale and polish at the dentist. It gets the job done, but for some patients, the process can feel uncomfortable – particularly if there is significant tartar build-up or sensitivity around the gums. At Love-Teeth in Prestwich, we offer something better.
EMS Airflow is a state-of-the-art hygiene treatment that uses a controlled jet of air, water, and fine powder to clean the teeth and gumline gently and effectively. It is a clinically advanced alternative to traditional scaling methods, and for many of our patients it is a far more comfortable experience. Whether you come for a routine hygiene appointment or are receiving treatment for gum disease, EMS Airflow at Love-Teeth gives your teeth a cleaner, fresher result.
What Is EMS Airflow?
EMS Airflow is a technology developed by Swiss dental company EMS (Electro Medical Systems). It uses a precise stream of warm water, compressed air, and fine erythritol powder particles to remove biofilm, plaque, staining, and soft deposits from the teeth and gumline. Because the stream is warm and the particles are very fine, the process is significantly more comfortable than traditional scraping with metal instruments.
The technology can reach areas that are difficult to clean manually – including deep pockets around the gums, tight spaces between teeth, and around orthodontic appliances. This makes it particularly effective for patients with gum disease, those who have completed orthodontic treatment, or anyone who wants a more thorough clean.
How Is It Different From a Traditional Scale and Polish?
Traditional scaling uses metal instruments to chip away hardened tartar from the tooth surface, followed by polishing to remove surface staining. It is an effective technique, but it can cause some discomfort – particularly if there is a lot of build-up or if the gums are already inflamed.
EMS Airflow takes a different approach. Rather than scraping, it removes the soft biofilm and plaque that builds up on the teeth using a guided airflow technique, which is gentler on the tooth surface and the surrounding gum tissue. Where there is hardened tartar that airflow alone cannot remove, we use ultrasonic scaling in combination – but the overall experience tends to be far more comfortable than traditional methods.
One of the most significant differences is the treatment of biofilm – the complex layer of bacteria that forms on the teeth before it hardens into tartar. Biofilm is the primary cause of gum disease and tooth decay, and EMS Airflow is highly effective at disrupting and removing it, making it an excellent tool for both treating and preventing gum-related problems.
What Are the Benefits of EMS Airflow?
The benefits of EMS Airflow extend beyond comfort. Because it removes biofilm so effectively, it is particularly beneficial for patients who are at higher risk of gum disease or tooth decay – including those with a history of periodontal issues, or those with certain medications that can affect the gums.
EMS Airflow also removes surface staining more effectively than a traditional polish for many patients, meaning your teeth look noticeably cleaner and brighter after the appointment. Coffee, tea, red wine, and food pigments are no match for a well-delivered EMS Airflow session. The treatment is also suitable for use around implants, fixed bridges, and orthodontic appliances without the risk of damaging these restorations.
